Celebrating Failure

Image result for skateboard clipart fallOne thing I attempted many times this semester was to try to learn how to longboard.  I now live half a mile from campus so I decided I could get a longboard and skate to my classes everyday.  In highschool I learned how to surf so I figured longboarding would be easy.  This semester I have ripped up two pairs of nice jeans from falling on my board.  The first time was down a back street so no one saw me but the second time was on campus and there were many people that saw me and laughed at me.  I have learned from experience where the nice places are to skate and what to do when I fall to avoid injuries.  In my past experience I have learned best through trial and error and this class has reinforced my ideas that the best way to learn is by failing.  I am probably more likely to go out and take risks now because I have realized how much I can learn from failing.

  1. Will,
man I feel the pain when you go flying off your board. It has happen to me many times, and has caused for scraped knees and bent toes. I find it endearing that you took the initiative to want to learn how to longboard and get to class that way. It shows that you have a strong will (no pun intended) and follow a vision. So I am sorry you fell and in front of people, that's the worst. But hey, now you know where you can skate and not eat concrete. Good job and check out my blog at: http://karinatamayo.blogspot.com/2016/04/celebrating-failure.html

  2. Hey Will,

Great job of point out your “failures” or “personal lessons of limitations” what I like to call them. Its amazing how much more we can learn when we fail at something we tend to look at the problem at hand in different directions and take it upon ourselves to improve. I am sorry that you fell in front of people on campus yet I am pretty sure majorty of them haven’t longboarded before. On the bright side now you know where to skate and how to fall safely. I am to scared to long board or skate yet it looks like so much fun, maybe one day I will try it out. Do you have any tips when falling?

Overall keep you the great work and good luck. Oh yeah, feel free to leave some feedback on my post.

  3. Will, I like your story, longboarding is definitely a useful skill, especially with all the hills that are on and around campus. It's a skill that I've thought about learning too, but I haven't put too much time into it because I already have a bike here. However, like anything, learning to longboard takes practice, and anyone that is just starting out will definitely experience some failure with it. The important thing is that you've learned from your failures and adapted your strategy to avoid further embarrassment, so I'm sure that you will learn fairly quickly if you keep at it. Good luck, and check out my blog if you're interested in my experience with failure.
